Looking beyond the toothbrush: nutritional support for gums and the jawbone

Posted by Ivodent on October 21, 2026

Good oral health starts with the fundamentals: effective daily hygiene, regular dental visits and, where needed, professional periodontal care. But for some patients, there may also be an opportunity to look beyond the toothbrush and consider the nutritional support behind the tissues and structures that keep teeth healthy and in place.

Two areas are particularly interesting: the gum tissue surrounding the teeth and the jawbone that anchors them.

CoQ10: an interesting nutrient in the gum-health conversation

Gum tissue is metabolically active and continually responds to bacterial challenge, which has prompted interest in the potential role of nutritional support in periodontal health.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has attracted particular attention. Research dating back to the 1970s identified CoQ10 deficiency in diseased gingival tissue compared with non-diseased tissue.

Research into CoQ10 supplementation has also reported improvements in gingival index and clinical attachment loss, with subgroup findings suggesting greater effects on gingival and plaque indices among patients aged 40 and older.

The evidence is promising but continues to develop, which makes CoQ10 best positioned as a supportive adjunct rather than a replacement for professional periodontal care, scaling or effective daily oral hygiene.

Doppelherz aktiv Coenzyme Q10 provides 30mg Coenzyme Q10, Hawthorn fruit extract and Vitamins B1, B6 and B12 in a convenient once-daily capsule format for adults. Coenzyme Q10 helps to maintain the production of cellular energy at optimal levels and, as an antioxidant, contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. It is gluten-free, lactose-free and sugar-free.

Supporting the structure that holds teeth in place

While gums tend to receive much of the attention in most oral health conversations, the jawbone is fundamental to the support of the teeth.

Calcium and Vitamin D3 both contribute to the maintenance of normal bones, while Vitamin D3 helps with the absorption and use of calcium and phosphorus.

Vitamin D3 is produced in the skin following exposure to sunlight but synthesis may be reduced with age, in people with naturally darker skin and when skin is covered by clothing or protected with sunscreen.

Magnesium also plays an important role in normal muscular function and numerous enzymatic and physiological processes in the body, working alongside calcium and Vitamin D3 rather than in isolation.

Doppelherz aktiv Magnesium + Calcium + D3 brings these three nutrients together in one daily tablet, providing 250mg Magnesium, 450mg Calcium and 10 microgram Vitamin D3. The tablet is gluten-free, lactose-free and sugar-free and can be divided in half if needed.

Its relevance lies in supporting normal bone and mineral status, including the same bone structures that anchor the teeth.

A broader conversation about oral health

Neither nutritional supplementation nor a single ingredient can replace the foundations of good oral care. But oral health does not exist in isolation from the rest of the body.

Considering the nutritional needs of both the gums and the structures supporting the teeth can add another dimension to patient conversations. CoQ10 has been investigated as a supportive adjunct in periodontal health, while calcium, magnesium and Vitamin D3 support the body's normal bone and mineral requirements.

Used appropriately, they can form part of a broader approach that keeps professional care and good daily oral hygiene firmly at the centre.
